no matter what differences you have, a long time friend will still hear you out and listen to whatever you say

Mutual respect and assumption of good intentions. (i.e trust) If they lash out every time they feel insulted, it just gets tiresome to correct after a while and if you do not respect each other, then any feedback you give or receive will be worthless. IMO Friends should push me as I push them to be better people. For me, at least the definition of a good person should somewhat align. That is the very core of what I expect from my friendships.

That's a tough one to narrow down to a concise answer but... Someone who isn't afraid to take initiative to start conversations or set up plans to do things. One who understands the concept of give and take, so to speak.
