As a guy who has traveled to Japan more than anywhere else since elementary school and has been enjoying Japanese media since junior high, I wanna connect to the Japanese culture further by learning Japanese. Also, it feels rewarding to communicate with locals (despite my poor listening skills).

I wanted to learn a new language and Japanese was the winner. Points in favour of Japanese: Completely different way of thinking. Interesting stories (books, light novels, manga ...) Exciting writing system (lots of alphabets, no spaces) A friend wanted to learn Japanese. (unfortunately he decided against it) Today it's more meditative learning, with the hope that I'll figure it out one day and I don't like to give up.

I wanted to learn Japanese to make connections with more people and to make enjoying Japanese media easier. I’ve continued to learn for those reasons, it motivates me to keep going

I remember when I was 13 and a friend of mine asked me "Do you watch anime?" and I didn't know what she was talking about. Never really bothered with anime. I watched some on TV when I was a kid, but that was all it was to me, childhood shows. At some point I started playing "osu!", when the game hadn't been around long still. I loved the idea of a fast precision game like that and learned to love rythm games through it. A lot of the music was Japanese and I found that some of the animes I watched as a kid continued being made. I started watching anime then. I never realized how different our cultures were before, it was quite fascinating. From then on I was hooked, slowly sliding into the language more and more. I've just been slacking for years, but I am learning, slowly.
